“Leave it all out on the field!”

The series continues where we discuss the traits of the BEST teams and players: the 7Cs!

Today we talk about being Courageous. Being courageous does not mean never having any fears or self-doubt. It means recognizing those fears and either letting them go or finding your way past them. Then, and only then, can you play fearlessly.

Today we discuss…

What it looks like when players and teams are courageous:

  • They’re diving and going all-out
  • They’re confident and show it in their body language
  • Everything seems to come easily

What it looks like when they aren’t courageous:

  • They hesitate, even if just for a second
  • They get quiet
  • They seem tense and unsure

Ways coaches could hurt their courage:

  • Having negative body language and reactions to a mistake
  • Punishing for mistakes that are out of their control
  • Not focusing on the reason behind consequences

Ways we can give them more courage:

  • Push them in practice first
  • Get them used to the pressure
  • Know each player’s needs and how to push/support them

What worked best with Alicia’s team last season:

  • Working on it and discussing it every day
  • Exploring what playing fearlessly means and looks like

Plus Alicia’s tips for coaches to maintain composure all season.
