SOFTBALL DRILLS DON’T GET PLAYERS GAME-READY UNLESS YOU WORK ON MENTAL SKILLS TOO

We’ve spoken to countless amazing coaches whose passion is to make a big impact on their players. They want to create a supportive culture that develops their skills for softball and life. These coaches are dedicated to their craft and put in a lot of time and effort. Yet something is still missing.

We have access to thousands of drills. Coaches share their philosophies for developing hitters and pitchers all the time on social media. Most people even talk about the importance of the mental game. What’s missing is actually implementing the mental game JUST AS MUCH as the physical game.

Listen in to today’s chat where we discuss some of the misconceptions about mental training and how to implement it daily when there are a million other things on your plate.

Today we dig a little deeper than softball drills. We discuss…

  • Diving into the Culture and Committed courses
  • Using empowerment and consequences to improve accountability
  • Planning ahead for implementing the mental game into practice
  • Some misconceptions about mental training including how to get your other coaches to buy in
  • Connecting the dots between mental training, softball and the rest of life
  • What they’re looking forward to after spring break

COACHING RESOURCE | Learn your coaching personality

Coaching is difficult because you have to work with and figure out so many different people. We hear from the top coaches that the best way to teach is to get to know what each athlete needs. Most agree that’s the way to go about it, but it sounds very time-consuming.

So we’ve got a bit of a shortcut for you. We’ve created a short quiz to help you discover your coaching personality. If you can spare 5 minutes, we can shed some light on how the way you think affects the way you coach. We’ll also share some tips for working with the other thinking styles!

To learn more about how to use your personality to coach each unique player, head to mentalsweetspot.com/coaching-personality!

That’s it for today! See you back here next week with a special guest who will fill in while the teams are on spring break. We’ll be discussing how mentorship helps co`aches rise up in the ranks and improve their craft!

Phenomenal information

As a new coach that believes in the mental game being so important, the podcasts and group discussions online have been amazing. Thank you ladies so much! Just knowing that the day to day struggles and doubts are felt by so many others has been remarkably reassuring. Thank you for what you are giving to others in the sport.

5 Star Podcasts!

I love listening to your podcasts while out on a run or on my way to work. They are focused and give me one or two pieces of inspiration to focus on with my team for the week. I have implemented a few key words (like "supportive") and have gotten huge returns from it! Keep up the great work!!

Mental Toughness

As a softball coach and a teacher, I appreciate all of the strategies and advice that Melanie shares each week! She is so inspiring, knowledgeable about the mental game, and willing to help in any way! One tip that really resonates with me is learning how to understand which things in life you are able to control, and what is out of your control. I teach these skills on the field and in the classroom! Thank you for all of the support and encouragement!

I love being part of the Mental Sweet Spot because it helps me think outside of the box to help our team grow mentally. I’ve noticed with the techniques and advice from Melanie and others in her Facebook Group I’ve help my team not only grow mentally but athletically as well. Mental toughness will help your team on the field as well and Melanie’s advice has proven that time and time again.
