WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MENTOR
SO YOU CAN GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR COACHING CAREER

Today’s guest recently completed her Doctorate of Higher Education and is in charge of the educational programming for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She’s involved in choosing speakers for their convention and clinics. Additionally, she has helped assemble resources for coaches at all levels, including their mentorship program.

She has had many experiences as a mentee through her 15-year collegiate coaching career as well. She learned from some of the sport’s greatest, including multiple hall-of-fame coaches with extensive coaching trees that span the country. Now she flexes her mentor muscles in her work at the NFCA and as a new coach of her daughter’s 6u team. 🙂

Please welcome Director of Education & Programming for the NFCA, Dr. Joanna Lane!

What to look for in a mentor

Today we discuss her experience & research on what to look for in a mentor.

  • The reason she chose to study how female coaches rise through the ranks
  • Some explanation why more males tend to apply for head coaching jobs
  • The power and influence of the mentors she’s had in softball
  • How the NFCA’s Mentoring Program is set up for coaches
  • Getting the support and resources you need to work hard and take care of yourself
  • Building our own belief that we can do our job well

COACHING CHALLENGE | Figure out what YOU need

With 99% of our mental and emotional energy being spent on our teams, it’s no wonder so many coaches burn out. We live in a culture where working harder and longer is applauded. But what’s the cost?

When you neglect your own needs as a person, you’re ultimately not helping your team either. We of course want to do all we can to help our teams. A big part of that is making sure we take care of ourselves. That’s how we guarantee we bring our best every day.

Let’s see how many coaches commit to this one…

That’s your challenge for the week: figure out what you need. You may need one full day off each week to decompress from softball. Maybe you just need some time each day to  spend with your loved ones. Taking a break does not mean you’re neglecting coaching. It means you’ll be able to give more once you are refreshed!

If this idea of mentorship sounds appealing to you, you are in the right place! It is such an important and needed aspect of coaching, we’ve incorporated it into all of our programs. Through group mentorship in our Dream Team Blueprint, to our  higher level masterminds, to one-on-one mentorship through consulting, we’ve got you covered!

The doors will reopen soon for our Dream Team Memberships and we will be accepting applications to our higher level programs this summer! In the meantime. Join us and other coaches like you in our free Mental Sweet Spot Coaches’ Clubhouse on Facebook. There you can test your mentorship muscles and seek support yourself.

To join, simply head to facebook.com/groups/mentalsweetspotcoaches!

That’s it for today! Next week we’ll be back with our Mastermind, catching up with Alicia and Wilma after spring break! We’ll chat about how they’re working on getting buy-in from their assistants and how the break helped them feel less overwhelmed and ready to attack the season!

Phenomenal information

As a new coach that believes in the mental game being so important, the podcasts and group discussions online have been amazing. Thank you ladies so much! Just knowing that the day to day struggles and doubts are felt by so many others has been remarkably reassuring. Thank you for what you are giving to others in the sport.

5 Star Podcasts!

I love listening to your podcasts while out on a run or on my way to work. They are focused and give me one or two pieces of inspiration to focus on with my team for the week. I have implemented a few key words (like "supportive") and have gotten huge returns from it! Keep up the great work!!

Mental Toughness

As a softball coach and a teacher, I appreciate all of the strategies and advice that Melanie shares each week! She is so inspiring, knowledgeable about the mental game, and willing to help in any way! One tip that really resonates with me is learning how to understand which things in life you are able to control, and what is out of your control. I teach these skills on the field and in the classroom! Thank you for all of the support and encouragement!

🌟 ⭐️ 🌟 ⭐️ 🌟

I love being part of the Mental Sweet Spot because it helps me think outside of the box to help our team grow mentally. I’ve noticed with the techniques and advice from Melanie and others in her Facebook Group I’ve help my team not only grow mentally but athletically as well. Mental toughness will help your team on the field as well and Melanie’s advice has proven that time and time again.
