KEEP THE MAIN THING THE MAIN THING
SO YOU CAN AVOID BACKTRACKING & KEEP IMPROVING

keep the main thing the main thing

The beginning of season is fun. We’re deciding on goals, making plans and setting the tone for our culture. Everyone is excited and on-board and it looks like this is going to be the best season YET!

Unfortunately it just takes one tiny misstep to make it feel like the whole plan has gone to hell. One player being selfish. One coach not seeming to care. One bad day where everyone seems to be hangry at once.

It’s in these moments when we’re tempted to hit the panic button. But you don’t have to if you laid a strong, steady foundation. All you have to do is keep the main thing the main thing. That thing is your culture.

Today we discuss how to keep the main thing the main thing by…

  • Lifting the hood for players to see why the coaching staff does certain things – including being hard on them
  • Letting the players share how they prefer to be coached
  • What to do when the team isn’t living their culture
  • Helping players and ourselves keep perspective
  • How to show players you care about them as people first – even when it’s uncomfortable for you

COACHING CHALLENGE | Keep the main thing the main thing.

You’ve heard the phrase, I’m sure. But it’s not to simple. Our challenge to you is zone in on what the main thing is. What is this team’s culture? What is going to take this particular group of girls as far as possible this season? Write that down in big, bold letters in the middle of a paper and draw a circle around them.

Now think about alllll the other things that happen within a season. What are things you have to do to keep the team running? What do you have to do to develop each player? What other things always tend to come up mid-season? Those go outside of the circle.

Now whenever you feel yourself getting caught up in the things outside of the circle, you’ll know it’s time to regain perspective. How you do that is up to you. When you do focus back on the main thing, you’ll be able to enjoy the job again. Because keeping the main thing the main thing is the best part of coaching.

Phenomenal information

As a new coach that believes in the mental game being so important, the podcasts and group discussions online have been amazing. Thank you ladies so much! Just knowing that the day to day struggles and doubts are felt by so many others has been remarkably reassuring. Thank you for what you are giving to others in the sport.

5 Star Podcasts!

I love listening to your podcasts while out on a run or on my way to work. They are focused and give me one or two pieces of inspiration to focus on with my team for the week. I have implemented a few key words (like "supportive") and have gotten huge returns from it! Keep up the great work!!

Mental Toughness

As a softball coach and a teacher, I appreciate all of the strategies and advice that Melanie shares each week! She is so inspiring, knowledgeable about the mental game, and willing to help in any way! One tip that really resonates with me is learning how to understand which things in life you are able to control, and what is out of your control. I teach these skills on the field and in the classroom! Thank you for all of the support and encouragement!
